What is the purpose of the Chunnel?

The Chunnel, or Channel Tunnel, is a significant engineering feat that connects England and France beneath the English Channel. This undersea tunnel facilitates the movement of people and goods between the two countries, greatly enhancing bilateral trade and tourism. Its existence allows for a seamless travel experience onboard Eurostar high-speed trains, making it possible to travel between London and Paris in just a couple of hours.

While it does enable a high-speed rail service, this is a result of its primary purpose, which is the connection between the two nations. Other options do not accurately reflect its functions; for example, it is not a highway for vehicles nor a ferry service, and while it serves rail transportation, it does not serve solely within the UK but extends into France as well.
